First grade is the first grade in elementary school. Learners entering first grade are expected to have an understanding and knowledge of basic skills in language arts, math, science and social studies. Third grade is the third school year of primary school. Learners are usually 8-9 years old, depending on when their birthday occurs. Third grade math expects learners to know their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division fact families and use them in equations and two-step word problems. In addition, third graders need to know how to do mental addition and subtraction.

Your child will learn about numbers to 1000, using place value. They will understand, apply and recall addition facts up to and including the use of mental mathematics strategies. Third grade is the crucial year when students make the leap from learning to read to reading to learn.
